CAMBIA's 3D vision
About CAMBIA
Priorities in 3D
Decentralise:
CAMBIA encourages local solutions to be
developed at the level of individual farms, ecosystems, societies and regions.
Businesses and R&D activities that can cope with, and which can address and
contribute to the extraordinary variability of agricultural production and
consumption can only increase the robustness of the solutions that are created
and the sustainability of the activities.
Democratise:
CAMBIA encourages broad-spectrum
participation of farmers as active innovators with personal investments in the
success of the innovations, and seeks to maximize input and commitment from
local researchers and their infrastructures, whatever their limitations.
Development of policies and technologies that are responsive to clear and real
public needs and concerns, without being slave to whim and hype is a high
priority.
Diversify:
CAMBIA considers the diversity of genetics,
societies and environments as an opportunity, and we craft methods and encourage
strategies that can make use of this diversity and maximize it. We also
appreciate that a diversity of solutions must be provided rather than a
prescriptive approach. Our clients must have the opportunity to choose from
amongst several technological options, or indeed reject the technology.
Action in 3D
Design:
Our technologies, products and policies are
created only after serious consideration of the context in which they must
operate. For molecular technologies, this almost always involves sophistication
in intellectual property matters, including analysis of the IP landscape and
determining pathways for Freedom to Operate for the many small entities that we
wish to aid, especially in the developing world. Elaboration of strategies to
'invent around' crucial bottlenecks, or to provide methods which can cater to
completely new opportunities informs our research planning. A small private
entity with a grand public-good ethos has a unique opportunity to embrace risk
and new thinking in ways that most other public or private institutions cannot.
Develop:
We are creative inventors. Rather than a
focus on serendipity-driven discovery research, we are hands-on scientists and
IP professionals who create practical methods and technologies in our
laboratories. This key link keeps us grounded in the realities of the tools that
we develop and allows us a more profound understanding of their limitations and
strengths. We are also grounded in the world of the users of our tools and keep
the user's needs and constraints foremost in our process.
Deliver:
We consider ourselves as successful only when
our technologies are incorporated into successful programs of innovation by our
clients and friends. Increasingly, delivery of new technologies must involve
provision of licenses for third parties to conduct work without infringing on
the rights of others. CAMBIA respects intellectual property - its own and that
of others - and strives to provide tools with as few constraints to operations
as possible. Creative incentive schemes and licensing approaches further the
adoption of our workproduct.
