CambiaLabs Projects

BioSentinel (a.k.a BioIndicators)

This project was created to provide non-disruptive, nondestructive, in vivo management modules that farmers and/or various agricultural communities could access cost-free through the BioForge and a BiOS license. The modules are designed to harness the creativity and ingenuity of local communities to assemble, test, and selectively adopt these protocols according to their needs and wishes.

GUSPlus™

GUSPlus™ is a new reporter gene for use in molecular biology. There are GUSPlus vectors for checking transformations and screening transformants, and special vectors for use with TransBacter strains. The GUSPlus gene was originally isolated from Staphylococcus sp. but has been extensively altered by codon optimisation for expression in plants. It is described in Nature 433:629ff and in patents and patent applications including…

Transactivation

Use of transactivator cassettes may enable precisely-controlled gene expression while getting around many promoter patents. In transactivation, upstream activation sequences (UAS) are inserted into plants separately from the transcriptional activators which regulate them. This enables the transcriptional activators to create changes in gene regulation by either inducing or suppressing the expression of certain genes even though they are not linked…

Telomerase

Cancer Diagnostics and Therapeutics. Built around the seminal work of Cambia’s former Chief Scientist Andrzej Kilian, the many splice variants of the catalytic subunit of human telomerase present intriguing possibilities. hTERT encodes the protein component of human telomerase, an enzyme that is important in cell division, cell aging and cell proliferation control (implicated in cancer and stem cell research), as described in Kilian et al…

Cowpea Transformation

TransBacter transformation of cowpea may lead to insect resistant crops. The aim of this open source project is to develop a method of transforming cowpea with TransBacter. We hope that the genetic transformation of cowpea will lead to insect resistant crops. Cowpea is attacked by a range of insect pests, in the field and during grain storage. Cowpea is attacked by a range of insect pests, in the field and during grain storage…

TransBacter™

TransBacter is a new method of gene transfer for plants – or indeed any eukaryotic organism – using bacterial species outside the genus Agrobacterium. TransBacter is designed to be a work-around to the many patents covering Agrobacteriumtransformation and thus aims to overcome the current IP restrictions to the commercialization of products created using bacteria-mediated gene transformation in plants…

Legacy pCAMBIA Vectors

Plant transformation is now routine in hundreds of laboratories worldwide, using bacterially-mediated or direct DNA transfer methods such as bombardment. These methods have both technical and intellectual property limitations (see the TransBacter Project, in which we’re improving the alternative to Agrobacterium transformation for more complete freedom to operate).

Apomixis (Egg Apparatus-Specific Enhancer)

Clonal reproduction of plants via seed, known as apomixis, has the potential to change plant breeding technology. Clonal reproduction of plants via seed production that doesn’t require pollen, known as apomixis, has the potential to change plant breeding technology in a way that returns empowerment to farmers and breeders.

Diversity-Arrays (DArT™)

DArT, or diversity arrays, is a technology developed by CAMBIA that enables researchers to analyze plant and animal genomes. Useful traits in agricultural plants and animals are genetically determined. For most crops, genetic improvement in the last fifty or more years has delivered gains in productivity and improvement in product quality.
